What Is Handicap Betting?
Handicap betting applies a virtual advantage or disadvantage to a team before the match starts, designed to level the playing field between two unevenly matched sides.
How It Works
- Negative handicap (-1): The team must win by two or more goals for the bet to win.
- Positive handicap (+1): The team can lose by one goal and the bet still wins.
Why Bettors Use Handicaps
Handicaps are most common when one side is a heavy favourite. Betting on a big favourite to win outright often pays very little — the handicap forces a bigger margin of victory, which pushes the odds higher and makes the bet more rewarding.
Asian Handicaps: Removing the Draw
Asian handicaps take this a step further with quarter and half lines (e.g. -0.5, -0.75). These fractional lines are specifically designed to eliminate the possibility of a push (refund), meaning every bet has a clear win or loss outcome.
